ECoH

What are their duties?

The Trillium Herald is responsible for all things heraldic in the Kingdom of Ealdormere, either by their own efforts of that of one of their deputies. They are the official voice of the Crown. They are responsible for making sure, as a kingdom, we follow the rules in Corpora, the Society Herald's Handbook, and Kingdom Law for court proceedings, precedence and titles, protocol, and armorial display.

Kingdom law states that copies of all reports sent to the Laurel King/Queen at Arms must be provided to the Crown and their Heirs. Failure to report regularly to Laurel and the Crown may be considered cause for removal from office.

The Trillium Herald's term of office is two years, with a possibility of a third year with the approval of the Crown after consultation with Council. They should also have an emergency deputy approved by the Crown at all times.

The Trillium Herald is responsible for the maintenance of the Kingdom's Herald's Handbook and the Order of Precedence. Also the Trillium Herald must maintain and distribute a warrant roster of all the heralds in the realm.

What are their rights?

It is the Trillium Herald's right to attend Council meetings, and to speak on matters that affect their office.

If someone is claiming a rank they do not have the right to, or is displaying regalia that violates Corpora or Kingdom Law, it is the Trillium Herald's responsibility to report this to the Crown, and ensure action is taken.

Should the Trillium Herald wish to remove an deputy or local officer, they must do so in conjunction with the Crown. Should the Trillium Herald wish to suspend any heraldic officer, they may do so unilaterally, and the suspension may last up to 90 days.

If someone is displaying offensive heraldic display, as to disrupt the activities of an SCA event, this is violation of the basic requirements for attendees of an SCA event to behave in a polite and gentle manner, and it is the Trillium Herald's responsibility to ensure the autocrat is aware of the matter, and that appropriate action is taken.

If there is an activity that will violate the Trillium Herald's responsibilities, such as a Coronation Ceremony that is inappropriate to the dignity of the Kingdom (i.e. handing the Crown to the Heir in the parking lot of the event), or a Crown Tournament that is not ceremonial in nature (i.e. a bear-pit style tourney only open to people with plastic armour), the Trillium Herald has the ability to stop these activities by removing themseves or any of their heraldic officers from its' participation, rendering it invalid as official business of the SCA and the Kingdom.

What is their role in Council?

The Trillium Herald should make the attempt to attend at least one Council meeting per reign. They should report on the status of any heraldic activities of the kingdom. They should report to Council of the reporting habits of any group, especially those wishing to attain full status. By Kingdom Law, all incipient groups and all Baronies must have a Pursuivant, and all groups must have a registered name and device.

Why are they wearing the Kingdom coat of arms?

By law, only the King, Queen, and Trillium Herald may wear the arms of Ealdormere. No one else may, unless they are acting as the representative of the Crown, and only on that occasion. The Prince and Princess may wear the arms with a label. Anyone else the Crown wants to affiliate with them through heraldry may wear a Royal Badge.

What are the Royal Badges?

Kingdom officers, heralds, servants, or anyone the crown wishes to bestow the right upon can wear the royal badges of the King and Queen.

Who is my court herald and do I need one?

Yes, you need one. A warranted herald or pursuivant MUST assist with any royal court. Failure to have one renders the court and its business invalid. The Trillium Herald or any other warranted herald in attendance of the event may be your court herald, at the Crown's desire.

What do I need to provide my court herald?

Kingdom regalia includes a book of ceremonies, and should include a herald's tabard. If you are choosing an inexperienced or unexpected herald to assist with your court, you should provide these items.

What is their role at Crown Tourney?

The Kingdom Herald must ensure the tourney and investiture of the Heirs is conducted in an appropriate and ceremonial manner.

All combatants of Crown Tourney must be armigerous or have dispensation from the Crown. The Trillium Herald may be called upon to confirm armigerous status when letters are received for Crown. The Crown is encouraged to send a copy of the list of combattants and consorts approximately two weeks prior to Crown Turney to the Trillium herald so that they may prepare the Processional and ensure that the combattants and consorts meet the heraldic requirement to participate in the Tourney.

What is their role at Coronation?

it is the duty of the Kingdom Herald to ensure the Coronation of the new King & Queen is conducted in an appropriate and ceremonial manner.

A warrant list of all the heralds in the kingdom must be presented to the crown for ratification and signature at Coronation.

Who are the deputies and what do they do?

The Inland Seas Herald is the position for the Trillium Herald's emergency/drop-dead deputy.

The Green Mantle Herald is the deputy responsible for submissions and monies processed by the College of Heralds.

The Caleygreyhound Herald is the deputy responsible for the order of precedence.

The Pentland Herald is the deputy responsible for field heraldry, and likely heraldic activities within the Crown Tourney itself.

The Privy Seal is the deputy responsible for maintaining the Scroll of Honour / Boke of Reigns as laid out in Kingdom Law.

The Kingdom Signet is the deputy responsible for overseeing the activities of the scribes in the kingdom, and the provision of scrolls to the Crown.

The other Senior Staff of the Trillium Herald, and their responsibilities are outlined here.

What can I do in court?

Anything laid out by Corpora and Kingdom Law. This includes the bestowal of awards and honours, charters, and treaties, law changes, proclamations & edicts, and other general activities that will entertain or enlighten the Kingdom. If an activity the Crown wishes to perform is in violation of Corpora or Kingdom Law (i.e. creating a Court Duke or granting a person the right to style themselves the Archbishop of Skraeling Althing) then the Trillium Herald is responsible for preventing that activity in court, and making the populace aware after the fact that that court and those activities are invalid.

What if I need a Ceremony?

If you desire a ceremony or script for an activity not included in your Book of Ceremonies, the Trillium Herald is responsible for providing such to you. The more lead-time given to them, the better the ceremony will be.

Who is responsible for keeping track of what awards I give?

You are. The Crown is responsible for making sure all awards they give are listed in the Order of Precedence.

Kingdom law states that if an award isn't included in the Order of Precedence in a timely manner, the award is invalid.

The Crown should make sure they keep a list of all awards given during their reign, and give a copy to the Trillium Herald to avoid any errors or omissions.

if someone wants to resign any award or title at kingdom or society level, they are required to send a copy of the letter to the Board of Directors and/or the appropriate royalty, but a copy must also be sent to the Trillium Herald for this to be valid.
